Cloudflare AI Gateway: control your application traffic

Cloudflare AI Gateway concept with an amber aperture controlling separate metal channels through a graphite wall

Cloudflare AI Gateway gives an application a place to observe and control requests to AI providers. Start with one request path, a clear data policy and a baseline. Then decide whether caching, rate limits or routing changes solve a demonstrated problem.

The official overview describes analytics, logging and traffic-control features. This guide focuses on planning a first integration. It does not assume that adding a gateway automatically improves answer quality or reduces every bill.

Define the Cloudflare AI Gateway pilot

First, choose one application feature with an outcome you can check. A documentation assistant answering from public product guides is a useful hypothetical example. Define an accepted answer, a refusal case and the person responsible for reviewing failures.

Next, record the current latency, usage and failure behavior for that feature. Count completed tasks as well as requests. Otherwise, fewer provider calls can look like progress even when users retry because answers became less useful.

Keep authentication and provider credentials on the appropriate trusted side of the application. Also confirm current provider support, plan limits and billing for the route you intend to use. An integration guide is not a permanent pricing guarantee.

Decide what request logs may contain

Cloudflare’s logging documentation explains that records can include prompts, responses and operational metadata. It also distinguishes current and legacy logging arrangements. Check which arrangement applies to your account before setting retention expectations.

First, classify the data in the selected feature. Public documentation questions and private customer records need different handling. Avoid collecting complete payloads simply because they make debugging convenient.

Next, choose the minimum evidence needed to diagnose a failed task. For some workflows, request identifiers, status and timing are enough. The documented payload-collection control can retain metadata without retaining raw bodies; also review separate exports such as Logpush.

Plan Cloudflare AI Gateway caching

The caching guide describes exact-request matching and per-request controls. Do not assume that two similar questions share a cached answer. A changed body or other cache-key input can produce a different entry.

For the hypothetical documentation assistant, first test a repeated public question with a stable source version. Then update that source and verify how an old answer expires or is bypassed. Define acceptable freshness before enabling caching broadly.

Also test tenant and user boundaries. A custom cache key that omits meaningful context can return the wrong answer to a different person. Treat cache-key design as part of application correctness, not only a cost setting.

Add limits and model fallback separately

Next, use the rate-limiting documentation to match a limit to the intended unit of traffic. Define what the user sees when the application cannot accept another request. A silent retry loop can turn a limit into extra latency and load.

Cloudflare’s dynamic routing guide describes versioned flows with conditions, model choices and fallback behavior. The documentation currently labels this feature beta. Check its supported request format and authentication requirements before using it.

Then test the alternative model against the same acceptance cases. A response arriving successfully does not prove that it follows the required format or uses the right evidence. Keep fallback policy explicit for tasks that should stop instead.

Check Cloudflare AI Gateway failure behavior

Use a small acceptance matrix before expanding the pilot. The following examples describe checks to run in your own isolated environment:

Provider timeout: a bounded retry or clear failure
Rate limit: a useful response without a retry storm
Repeated public request: intended cache behavior
Changed source version: no stale answer beyond policy
Different customer: no shared private response
Fallback model: required answer format still holds
Logging: permitted fields only, with defined retention

Also treat request identifiers as opaque values. Cloudflare’s October 2026 changelog records an identifier-format change. Avoid depending on the shape of an identifier when its purpose is correlation.

Expand from evidence about the complete task

Finally, compare the pilot with the baseline. Review answer quality, accepted-task cost, tail latency and operating effort. Our guides to AI cost optimization and AI agent observability explain those broader measurement choices.

Cloudflare AI Gateway is most useful when each control has an owner and a clear purpose. Add one policy at a time, inspect the result and retain a way to return to the previous working route.
